Your iPad is More Than Cool; Make the Most of It

Your shiny new tablet is pretty. And it has all sorts of fun bells and whistles. But are you making the most of what it has to offer? Have you discovered the ways it can make your professional life easier? Or are you just playing Angry Birds and updating your Facebook status on it? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Do I Really Need an App for That?

Sure, there seems to be an app for everything. But do you really need them all? One of the most useful features of any tablet is Internet browsing. With your browser, you can access websites that may achieve many of the same things as an app. Of course, it’s absolutely imperative that a site be optimized for mobile if it’s going to have the same kind of functionality as an app.

We recently released our eSignDashboard app (check out the press release here). Choosing to create an app rather than just a website optimized for mobile was a carefully thought-out, strategic choice. We decided that it would achieve the best user experience. We built it so that it could have a wide host of features including the ability to sign documents electronically, manage documents, fax electronically, and much more.

Some not so obvious ways to go green

Going green has never been more popular than it is now. Whether or not you choose to adopt a more green lifestyle, there are certainly realistic ways each person can live a more environmentally conscious lifestyle that complements their daily life.

Yes, there are the obvious, stopping the wasteful use of paper, recycling etc., but what about some not so obvious yet easy ways to go green? Here are a few ideas:

Start your morning with a USDA approved organic coffee which is grown using more sustainable methods.
If you don’t brew at home, bring your reusable mug to your local coffee shop. Not only will you possibly get a price break, your coffee will stay warm longer.
Turn off all the electronics you are not using in your home. Actually, this one is double the goodness because as I seen on Oprah, you can drastically cut your electric bill!
Recycle your electronics. Did you know it’s illegal to dump your electronics? They add nasty chemicals and heavy metals to the environment. I know, it’s so much easier to throw that busted keyboard in the trash but, many stores you go to have some sort of free electronic recycling box, especially electronic stores.
Stop tending to your lawn. Well, just don’t tend to it as much. Why? Because if your grass is a little longer, it absorbs more sunlight which makes it greener. It also makes the roots stronger which requires less watering.
Slow down. According to goodhousekeeping.com, driving above 60 MPH is like adding .50 cents to every gallon of gas, who knew! Guess who’s moving over to the slow lane…
Store your paperwork in a cloud based document management system such as eSignDashboard. By doing this, not only can you access the documents you need anywhere, you’re saving time you would not have had if you were shuffling though loads of paperwork.

The cost of running away from technology

As a recent attendee of the NAR conference I saw first-hand both the excitement and reluctance people had at the thought of using electronic signatures. Many were so excited that they wanted to get started right away, while others reacted with fear of using a technology they know nothing about. Fear, is derived from the feeling of unfamiliarity. So, how can those agents and other users alike warm up to the idea of using technology that may have not been possible when they first got started in their careers?

Each individual needs to become comfortable with any technology at their own pace. Many people were reluctant to use desktop computers when they first came out but over time, one must adapt or perish, the same is also true in any industry. Growth only comes from re-defining and adapting to those changes.

The cost of adopting new technology may just pay off

According to ActiveRain.com, rich real estate agents spend more on technology than “poor” real estate agents do. In fact, they spend the same amount on technology in one month that a “poor” agent spends in one year.

That makes me wonder, why is that? Why is it that we tend to think that by holding back we are saving ourselves money? Or, that we are handling our workload with perfection when we haven’t bothered to try and evolve in our industry? Meanwhile, John Doe is making a fortune just because he’s “rich” and can afford all of those extra tools. I beg to differ, the reason Mr. Doe seems to be floating right along on a pile of cash is because he took the time to maximize his profits and time by adopting tools and technology to aid him in his business.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying , “you have to spend money to make money” , and nothing says that more than the this scenario. Going paperless isn’t just about getting the cool new gadgets or tools, it’s about increasing productivity, decreasing the time it takes to complete a deal and ultimately saving money.

Our NAR trip

We had a great time this past weekend at the National Association of Realtors (NAR) tradeshow in Anaheim, CA. Tons of our loyal users came by to say hello and it was great catching up with them all!

Thousands of real estate professionals attended and many of them were very excited about the eSignDashboard iPad app. It was great hearing all of the enthusiasm for their ability to get clients’ wet signatures on forms and contracts on the iPad. Some were so excited they wanted to immediately download it to their iPads.

Speaking of the iPad, we gave one away this year and many attendees jumped at the opportunity to win it. We had close to one thousand entries! We decided to pick the winner after the tradeshow and when we got back to the office we had a drawing. And the winner is…Bobby Olilang from New Port Beach, congratulations Bobby!

Chronicles of a modern home buyer

A friend of mine spent over a year looking for a home to purchase and during that time, signed and initialed countless offers and counter offers. The thought of it is exhausting. It went a little like this: she would find a place, get a large email with countless pages depending on the purchasing situation, short sale, REO etc. Print them all out, sign, scan and try to email them back–but only in pieces because the file size was always too large. Finally, she pondered over and over again as to whether or not she should just shell out the costly fees of faxing them out or, drive 30 minutes away to give them to her realtor– if the scanning wasn’t going so well, tiresome right? Remembering this makes me wonder why all realtors aren’t using eSigning technology. The home buyers’ life would be so much easier if each realtor just had a product like eSignOnline.

Do you file personal documents electronically?

I recently came across an article where a woman was venting about how years ago, during the emergence of the home computer, people were saying that we would be a paperless society–when in fact, she feels, we are using more paper than ever before. She explained that she has so many documents, for business, school, and personal use, that one thing a computer can’t do is manage them all. Because of that, she maintains an arsenal of printed documents to rummage through when she needs them.

Sometimes, I think it is easier for us to comprehend the organization of our paperwork when we see it in front of us. If our documents are filed away in a neat eDoc program on our computer or tablet, somehow it becomes invisible and seems less manageable. Perhaps with continuing advancement of technology and the shifting of this mindset, we will be able to organize our files electronically without feeling that loss of control. What do you think? Would you prefer to file your documents electronically or not?

Treasury Board President Wants the Federal Government to Go Paperless

The Treasury board president, Tony Clement, says he wants the federal government to mostly go paperless by using computers and other technology available to politicians. The tablet computer is one of the ways in which he plans to go about executing his paperless plan. Despite the cost of streamlining all the paper documents into digital form along with the cost of upgrading the outdated IT system, Clement seems optimistic and excited for the long term savings to the federal government.
